Goal
Let dispatch follow your position for the job you are driving, without it stopping when you lock the screen or open your maps app.
Prerequisites
- Your company uses live tracking. If it does not, the sharing control does not appear at all. Ask your office.
- You have accepted the job, and it is due within the next 2 hours or already started.
- On Android, you use the 4fleet app from Google Play. In a phone browser, sharing pauses whenever the page is not on screen.
Steps
- Open the job from Today and select Share my location.
- The first time, the app explains that it collects your location during an active job, even when the app is closed or not in use. Select OK to continue; tracking starts only when you choose to share and stops when you end the job or turn sharing off.
- When Android asks for location access, allow it.
- The app then asks you to set location access to 'Allow all the time'. Select OK, and in the phone settings that open, choose Allow all the time for 4fleet. Without it, sharing stops the moment you leave the app.
- Back in the job, check the sharing button. It shows Connecting GPS... first and Sharing live location once dispatch receives your position.
- If you skipped the setting in step 4, select Location settings on the job at any time to open it again.
- To stop sharing before the job ends, select the sharing button again. Sharing also stops on its own once your last job on the booking is completed or marked as a no-show, and when you sign out.
Expected result
The job shows Sharing live location, and dispatch sees your position while you drive, also with the screen locked. On Today, the Share live location switch is on while the job is in progress.
Troubleshooting
- If you see "Live tracking is off for this job - ask your operator to enable it.", the office has turned tracking off for this job. Only the office can turn it back on.
- If you see "Live location sharing is not available for this job right now.", the job has not been accepted yet, is more than 2 hours away, or tracking was stopped by the office. Accept the job first, or try again closer to pickup.
- If you see "Start an active job before sharing your location.", the Share live location switch on Today works only for a job in progress. Select I'm on my way first, or share from the job itself.
- If you see "Allow location 'all the time' for the 4fleet app to share in the background.", open Location settings and choose Allow all the time.
- If you see Location sharing paused, you are in a browser and the page went to the background. Reopen it and keep it on screen, or install the Android app.
- If the button shows GPS connection issue, your position is not reaching dispatch. Keep the app open; positions are kept on the phone and sent when the signal returns.
- If you see "Location permission denied. Enable it in your browser settings to share.", allow location for 4fleet in your browser's site settings and select Share my location again.
- If sharing still stops in the background on Android, your phone's battery saver may be closing the app. Set battery use for 4fleet to unrestricted in the phone settings. The wording of that setting differs between phone makers.
